HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OSHA---MARKING 50 YEARS IN 2010!!!
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
OSHA is celebrating a special birthday this year—our 50th!
A golden anniversary is a time to honor history. It’s a chance to reflect on the past and all that has occurred. It’s also a time to remember the people that have been instrumental in the evolution of our profession in Oklahoma.
Even our name changes reflect our history. We once were known as speech correctionists, logopedics, speech teachers, speech therapists, speech clinicians, speech pathologists and, as language became recognized as a part of our job, we evolved into Speech/Language Pathologists. By contrast, audiologists appear to have escaped these title changes even as their role has expanded and been shaped by advancing technology.
In this anniversary year, it only seems fitting to remember and recognize our colleagues—all those who traveled from site to site, carrying their handmade materials to their closet size therapy room, to serve large caseloads with dedication and professionalism.
As part of our anniversary celebration, we are attempting to recreate our history but we will fall short of our goal without your help. If you have something/someone we need to include in OSHA’s biography, please let us know. Elaine Hobson, Past President, is charged with the formidable responsibility of putting this together. I know she would greatly appreciate your help. Also, if you happen to have any photos from OSHA conferences, meetings, activities, etc., we would like to include those in our written history. If you have any of these things to share, please email us at oslha@hotmail.com. Thank you in advance for your help on this project.
In keeping with our focus on history, we are very proud to announce that Dr. Glenda Ochsner will be our keynote speaker at the Fall Conference. Dr. Ochsner is one of those pioneers I mentioned earlier. She made such an impact on our state that she went on to become President of ASHA. To my knowledge, there have no other ASHA presidents from our state.
Just in case you haven’t heard, this year’s conference is scheduled for September 30th and October 1st in Tulsa. I look forward to seeing all of you there!
